August 25, 2014

Dear everyone,
Well, this week has been pretty good, we finally got past the mission standard of excellence for lessons taught, that makes one week in a year and a bit.  But it was great, and we worked hard.
This blog will be answering questions from my mom since asking where the Christians live doesn’t often make for the best stories.  I guess I mentioned that we're using facebook, so I'll explain a little about that.  We use the family history computers in our church for an hour a day, and that's pretty good.  We're trying to get more effective at it, and it's slow but I can see it working very well.  We watched Elder Bednar's devotional last night while waiting for statistics, the Sweep the earth as with a flood one.  I'd like to encourage everyone with a social media to really promote goodness and share what the church has.  It will help this work go so much quicker, you can be a part of the Lord hastening His work in His time.  It's really great.  What a blessing.
For my clothing, shoes, and stuff, it's holding up great.  Those of you going on a mission, I recommend CTR clothing's shirts and socks.  The socks don't have holes or anything, they still have all the elastic stuff, which is nice, and the shirts aren't quite white anymore, but they don't look nearly as bad as a lot of other Elder's stuff.
We're eating out a lot, just because we're trying to spend as much time out of the house as possible, and also because I'm bad at cooking.  Killing 2 birds with one stone.  It hasn't lent to any weight change, I'm still about 83 kilos, depending on the time of day.  And I'm always lighter on Sundays (no buying food).  I have stayed amazingly healthy.
I got a new suit (maybe you noticed).  A dude in Pasar mayestik made it for a great price, and it's way nice.  Fitted and everything.  It's great!  But worthless here in Surabaya, we never wear suits out here.  So it's still in the mission home.  With my other one from the states...

I love you!  Elder Heiner

August 18, 2014

Well folks, it's been a great week.  We've been all over the country (not really, just to Jakarta and back) and seen the zone.  I've now been on 11 domestic Indonesian flights on 6 different airlines.  Garuda is the best and Lion is the worst.  We flew Air Asia and Batik this week, Air Asia is OK, and Batik is super nice.  Almost as good as Garuda, but not quite.  Jakarta was nice, we got some good training from President Donald, so that's great.  I love learning from him.
On Friday, we had our ZTM, little zone conference, which was fun.  I was happy to see all of our missionaries there, and they're all doing well.  I really love getting together with everyone.  We made some good goals, and I think that these next four months are going to be really good ones.
My new companion is a really hard worker, and we're doing good stuff.  We find ourselves speaking a lot of English.  He's from Ohio, he's the 9th child of 11, and we might be the tallest companionship in the mission.  We're like the same height, but it's taller than most people, let alone Indonesians.
We had a p-day going away party with pizza and a movie.  The party was for Elder Marsudi and the Andersons, our mission couple.  They're from Las Vegas.  They’ve been great to work with.
We went to the park the other night, and there was an owl festival (we didn't know beforehand, but it was cool.)  Some of them were trained to be able to grab small dead mice out of your hand and then land on a guys arm behind him.  They were so cool, but I didn't try it because they didn't let us, and because owls have big claws.  Also, "owl" in Indonesian translates to "ghost bird" which is cool.
It's been a fun week, and I'm not really sure what else to tell you, so that's that!  I'm still healthy and happy and busy and all that jazz.  It's a blast.
Love,  Elder Heiner

In Jakarta with other missionaries in my MTC group.
I still don't know who decided to trust us.
Like my new suit?  There are times I want to wear one.  Did
I mention, it is Louis Vuitton.  And it's fitted.  Yeah,
it's totally real.

August 11, 2014

Well, here we are, sitting in Jakarta, emailing on the AP's computer, and I don't have that much time.  Sooooo, the big thing this week is that there was a transfer, and I got a new companion, his name is Elder Headrick and He's from Ohio, and he's really cool.  We've been companions since 5:30 on Sunday afternoon, and now it's 1 on Monday, so we've not done much.  But we did come to Jakarta...  He just came from Medan, so he's taken 3 flights in the last 2 days, and there's one tomorrow night.  He's a trooper.  I'm going to enjoy working with him.
Also, Elder Canfield and Elder Sutarno are the new ZL's in Solo and Jakarta respectively, meaning that I get to see them today/tomorrow at MLC.  So that's exciting.  Old companions.  And they're great.  Elder McCleary is now in the same house as me, and Elder Wills just moved down to Malang so I'll get to go on splits with him again.  It seems as I'm surrounded with great missionaries.
Other than that, I have little to report on.
I love you,  Elder Heiner

August 4, 2014

Well, another week has come and passed...
The most exciting thing is ...  Transfer calls!  Because Elder Marsudi goes home in 6 days, I just figured that it was on its way, and I'm going to be companions with Elder Headrick, a great missionary that I am stoked to work with.  He's moving from Medan, so that'll be a big difference.  Elder Wills is also moving, but only to Malang, so I get to see him all the time!  And his replacement is Elder McCleary, from my MTC group, so that'll be fun.  Also, the 2 of the 3 companions that I've had that are still missionaries are becoming zone leaders, so I'll get to see them at MLC next week!  It's going to be great fun.
This past week has been really quiet, it was Hari Raya Idul Fitri, which is a Muslim holiday after Ramadan.  So everyone went home to where they were born, and Surabaya became a ghost town. We had no investigators in town, so we did proselyting all day, which wasn’t too exciting, but we have a handful of good contacts to give as referrals to other companionships in Surabaya since they don’t live in our area.  Funny how it works like that.  We have a couple for us, too, but most are for them.  Whatever.
I got to do splits with Elder Wills, which was a lot of fun.  I really like the guy, and he's a real example to me of how a missionary should be.
Every Saturday night we get groceries after English class, and I always buy a carton of chocolate milk, because regular milk tastes terrible, and I figured that I should get some dairy, and by Sunday night, it's always gone.  But it sure is tasty!
We're going next week to Jakarta because there's a transfer on Friday-Sunday and its MLC, and each of the zl's get a new comp.  This coming week looks like it will be a good one!  Anyways, gotta run.  Love you!

Me at the zoo tower.  The skyline and roofs are cool.
This is what it takes to order 10 chocolate sundaes
from McDonalds.  We cleaned out all our loose coins.
Also, they deliver here!  I ate 4, Elder Wills ate 4,
and Elder Lie ate 2.  FYI, servings are a lot smaller here.
